One of these advantages is flexibility. With fixed-wireless broadband, speed is not dependent on the cables that run to your building. Instead, the bandwidth is determined by the signal from the base station to your subscriber unit. This means that you can choose the exact bandwidth – in increments of one mbps – that your business pays for. This level of customization is not possible with wireline service, through which bandwidth is determined by the type of cable that runs to your building from the junction box. This limits your bandwidth choices to that dictated by the cables run by the ISP. A T1 line, for example, delivers 1.54 mbps. The next largest cable, a T3 (or DS3) line, delivers 45 mbps. To get service in between these amounts, a company would have to have multiple T1 lines installed.

In theory, a business could have the correct number of T1 lines installed to deliver the bandwidth they want. In practice, costs often limit the options, especially for small businesses. Because each T1 line costs the same, eventually, installing more T1 lines becomes cost-prohibitive. At this point, companies often opt to upgrade to a T3 line. This option is fine for businesses that need 45 mbps of bandwidth. For many, though, this choice is dictated entirely by costs. With fixed-wireless, however, incremental increases cost much less than installing a new line would cost. This allows a business to contract for the bandwidth they want and save money every month.
