WISPs are Wireline ISPs

A WISP, or Wireless Internet Service Provider, offers a completely wireless connection that is a reliable alternative to traditional wireline ISPs. Most wireline ISPs in Houston lease the lines that connect your business to the nearest point-of-presence (the “last mile” or “local loop”) from the telephone company. They then use those lines to provide service to you.

This arrangement has a few disadvantages:

  • Problems can be difficult to diagnose and takes longer to resolve. When a problem arises, the ISP and the telephone company may not be able to immediately tell where in the system the problem occurred.
  • Problems can be blamed on each other. When you call to notify your ISP of a problem with your service, they can pass the blame for the problem on to the phone company, which provides the connectivity from your location to your ISP’s network. Calls to the phone company can result in the blame being laid on the ISP.
  • Physical damage to the cables anywhere along the network can take weeks or months to repair, especially when the problem is caused by a major fiber cut. 
  • Getting additional lines installed to increase bandwidth can be costly and time consuming.
